Many interesting things on the web this week. We discussed lately about newspaper and magazine design (Internazionale new layout and a new Italian newspaper Il Fatto); if you are interested in the topic you shouldn’t miss this article Links in Print: The Story of a Beautiful Failure where Information Architects tell in details how they participate in a pitch for the redesign of the Swiss «Tages Anzeiger». They didn’t win, but their web approach to newspaper design is very interesting. On Mario R. Garcia’s blog there is a thorough analysis «Tages Anzeiger of Switzerland: tale of a new look, and the model that didn’t quite make it»

WOFF
A really huge group of type designers and type foundries are supporting the new Web Open Font Format (WOFF) a proposal by Tal Leming, Erik van Blokland and Jonathan Kew. Even Mozilla (the link has a list of the official endorsers from the font world). «Mozilla is kicking Apple’s typographical ass» quoting typographica on twitter. Lots of exciting stuff ahead! «If you’re a total font nerd and you enjoy a soothing British accent, you might want to watch this video» about future firefox features (sorry for the alliteration).

Book and editorial
— If you are interested in book covers and editorial in general, there is nice project called «Daily book graphic»: «Everyday I post some sort of graphic element from a book that I own. My plan is to do this for a year – February 21, 2009 to February 21, 2010.»
— On Eye mag blog there is an interesting review about «Fully Booked» compared to the Tschichold’s classic «The Form of the Book» from 1975, demonstrating how good and up-to-date the latter still is.
— The Colophon magazine, created by magazine makers from around the world in just 48 hours at the Colophon International Independent Magazines Biannale, is out now. If you can’t grab a copy, there is a full on-line version. More about it on magCulture.

Photography
The latest Eye Magazine is dedicated to photography. You can read the entire issue here. The topic is developed further on its blog with an interesting series of articles about the use of stock photos in graphic design. All the best projects using only library images are listed here. There are some more in depth analysis on the winners of different categories on the eye blog: Books // Stamps // Reports // Music 1 // Music 2.

Type design and typography
Again on Eye blog a nice review of the new British trend of extreme kindness in graphic design «The cheerful, oversized, rounded fonts of caring, sharing Britain» compared to german efficiency.

The beloved Ms Eaves has now two brand new companions: Ms Eaves Sans e Ms Eaves Modern.

The Daily Drop Cap is an ongoing project by typographer and illustrator Jessica Hische. Each day (or at least each WORK day), a new hand-crafted decorative initial cap will be posted. Amazing lettering that can be embedded in your blog.
